Process of Assessment and Evaluation

The academic programme at Bishop Scott Senior Secondary Girls’ School is comprehensive so as to enable the students to develop intellectually and attain growth in personality. Our Assessment / Examination policy involves a system of school based review of learning of students that covers all aspects of the students’ development. It is a developmental process of assessment which emphasizes on continuity in evaluation and assessment of broad based learning and behavioural outcomes on the other. The scheme is thus a curricular initiative, attempting to shift emphasis from testing to holistic learning. It aims at creating good citizens possessing sound health, appropriate skills and desirable qualities besides academic excellence. It is hoped that this will equip the learners to meet the challenges of life with confidence

and success. Hence, we have a combination of Assessments for Learning and Assessments of Learning for Montessorians and students of Classes I and II. Class III onwards, the school follows Uniform Assessment Policy as stipulated by Central Board of Secondary Education. Each academic session is divided into two terms till Class VIII. During each term there will be regular Exit Tests and cumulative assessments followed by term evaluations.

Uniform Assessment is a two-term scheme, at the end of which Half-Yearly and Yearly examinations will be held. Both Term 1 and Term 2 will be of 100 marks each, which will include 20 marks for the Periodic Assessment, including notebook keeping and subject enrichment activities, while the remaining 80 marks will be for the performance in Half- Yearly/Yearly examinations. There shall be two cycles of periodic assessments per term and the best of the two shall be taken for various subjects for Classes III to VIII. For Classes IX to XI, as per CBSE guidelines, an average of the best two out of three periodic assessments would be taken in addition to notebook keeping and subject enrichment activities (10 marks + 5 marks + 5 marks = 20 marks). Yearly/Board Examination shall be of 80 marks. Regular Class Tests shall be helpful to students in reviewing the progress of their understanding of the subject matter.

It is compulsory for all the students to appear in the assessments and examinations in order to get promotion to the next class. Periodic Assessments and performance in the class during the entire year is also taken into account. Periodic tests will be part of the regular assessment. Minimum attendance should be in consonance with CBSE norms for each term/ academic session to be eligible to appear in the examination. In the event of a student missing her assessment due to her absence from school, there shall be no re-assessment for the student. The regularity in attendance and work is imperative. The general criterion for promotion to the next class is that students need to secure 33% marks out of 20 marks (Internal Assessments) as well as 80 marks (Half Yearly/Mid-Term and Yearly Examinations).

For a balanced development of students, co-curricular activities are carried out by the teachers and term-wise grading is done. The aspects of regularity, sincere participation, output and teamwork are the generic criteria for grading in the following co-scholastic activities:

  • Work Education (It refers to skill-based activities resulting in goods or services useful to the community.)
  • Art Education (Visual & Performing Art)
  • Health & Physical Education (Sports/Martial Arts/Yoga etc)

The students will also be assessed for discipline which will be based on factors like attendance, sincerity, behaviour, values, tidiness, respectfulness for rules and regulations, attitude towards society, nation and others.

There is no provision for taking tests in advance or re-testing students, who remain absent on the day of the examination. Students reporting late for examinations will not be given any extra time for answering the question papers. Any use of unfair means during any of the examinations will result in the immediate issue of Transfer Certificate without any notice. Promotions are granted on the basis of the whole year’s work; hence, regular attendance, continual work progress and performance in the examinations are of immense significance.
